HistoryChester County was one of the three original counties created by William Penn in 1682, alongside Delaware and Buck County. Its name is derived from Chesire (i.e. Chester-shire), England, from which many of its early settlers emigrated. West Chester, Chester County’s seat, was originally named “Turks Head” in 1799, when the population was 374. Chester County also consists of the towns of Kennett Square, Phoenixville, Coatesville, and Malvern, each of which has their own unique history in agriculture, industry, and the revolutionary war. The earliest iron and steel forges were located in Phoenixville and Coatesville. Kennett Square continues to have a booming mushroom farming business, dating back to 1885. Furthermore, Chester County as a community played an important role in the Underground Railroad, helping many slaves continue north to obtain emancipation. AreaChester County is a significant constituent of the Brandywine Valley, which boasts world-class attractions. Longwood Gardens includes over 1,000 acres outdoors and an additional 20 acres indoors of grand trees, beautiful flowers, and luxurious architecture. One element that strikes visitors about this small river valley is the abundance of quaint villages and hamlets, dating back to the 1700’s, that are still intact. The heritage of Brandywine Valley’s open space, old houses, cherished landmarks, and giant sycamores afford experienced travelers the pleasantry of comparing it to the any and all countryside they have seen in their travels. LifestyleYet, while having a "rural" feel, Chester County provides all the facilities of a modern metropolis. The Vanguard Group Inc. and QVC are both major elements of commerce. The proximity of the county to Philadelphia, New York, Wilmington, and Baltimore offers businesses and individuals a geographical advantage, as a large portion of the nation’s consumer buying power is within a day’s trip. Furthermore, the Chester Waterfront is a major on-going revitalization project for the county. Governor Ed Rendell pledged $47 million to the project to compliment the private investments that have already been flowing into the area. The pledge by the state will assist in funding a sport stadium for an Major League Soccer franchise, major retail space, an exposition center, as well as additional office space and residential housing. |
